Formulas

Fill a column from the other columns of each row: join names, pick the best email, sort companies by size and more. Settings, Formulas teaches it with examples you can try.

What a formula is

A formula fills a column for you. It reads each row and writes the answer, for example `{{First name}} {{Last name}}` gives Jane Doe. Formulas work on your own data and follow the row when it changes.

Settings, Formulas (under Account settings) teaches formulas with popular examples, a cheat sheet and a place to try them on a pretend person called Jane. Nothing you type there is saved.

Add a formula column

  1. Open a table and click + Add column, then Formula.
  2. Type the formula. Type / to pick a column, or press Ctrl + Space for suggestions of functions and what comes next.
  3. Or describe what you want in your own words and let the AI write the formula (Ctrl + Enter, or Cmd + Enter on a Mac, in the description box). Spelling mistakes are fine.
  4. Check the answer on the first rows, then save the column.

Popular formulas

  • Full name: `{{First name}} {{Last name}}`
  • The best email: {{Verified Email}} ?? {{Work Email}} ?? {{Email}}
  • Website from an email: domain({{Email}})
  • Big or small company: {{Company size}} >= 500 ? "Big" : "Small"
  • Fill in when empty: {{Phone}} ?? "No phone yet"
  • A hello line: `Hi {{First name}}, how is {{Company}}?`
  • Is the email missing? isEmpty({{Email}})
  • Neat capital letters: titleCase({{First name}})
  • Is it a sales job? {{Job title}}.toLowerCase().includes("sales")
  • Days since added: daysSince({{Created At}})
  • Revenue in millions: round({{Revenue}} / 1000000, 1)
  • One part of an AI column: {{Company Research}}.summary

Cheat sheet

  • Use a column: {{ }}, for example {{First name}}.
  • Write some words: " ", for example "Hello". Mix words and columns between back quotes: `Hi {{First name}}`.
  • Use something else when it is empty: ??, for example {{Phone}} ?? "No phone".
  • If yes, give this, otherwise that: ? :, for example {{Company size}} > 100 ? "Big" : "Small".
  • Both must be true: &&. One of them is enough: ||. Is the same as: ==. More than or less than: > and <.
  • Check if it is empty: isEmpty( ). Get the website from an email: domain( ). Count the days since a date: daysSince( ).

Try it yourself

  1. On Settings, Formulas, scroll to Try it yourself.
  2. Type what you want in your own words and press Generate, or type a formula, or press Try on any card.
  3. Jane gets shows the answer for the pretend person. Click a column pill (First name, Last name, Company, Email, Job title, Company size) to add it.
  4. Click Copy on a formula, then paste it into a formula column in your table.

Tips

  • Column names go between double curly braces, exactly as they are written in the table header.
  • A formula that reads an AI column can take one part of its answer with a dot, for example {{Company Research}}.summary.
  • Ask AI Assistant "Add a formula column that..." and it adds the column for you after you confirm.
